Texas – Corpus Christi – Lozano Golf

02-26-26

Located just minutes from Downtown Corpus Christi, Lozano Golf Center offers an unforgettable golf experience. Home to an 18-Hole Regulation Course and The Firefly 9-Hole Course, where you can play day or night, this premier facility also features a lighted driving range, short game practice with chipping greens, bunkers and a spacious 11,000 square foot practice green.

I played “The BlueHeron Course” (18 holes) on a warm 89 degrees day with some mild wind. Just one day earlier the wind was so strong it could make the ball wiggle a bit while it’s sitting on the tee. I was told by some locals that this is about the best time of year to play here if you don’t like extreme heat and humidity. Having just arrived from Portland Oregon where it was in the mid 40’s and raining for most of the past 2 weeks, I was totally enjoying this weather even with the high wind.

First Impressions:

I was impressed with how the Lazano Golf Center has so much to offer with 2 courses, driving range, putting and chipping greens, full-service golf shop and restaurant. The 9-hole course (The Firefly) is open for play at night under the lights. I played both courses and had a great time.

The club house offers everything you can expect, and the restaurant has good food and plenty of space to hang out. At hole #8 you can call ahead to order food, and it will be ready to pick up as you come around to play hole #10. At hole #9 you can order a cold drink, and they will have that ready for you as well. I found the staff to be very helpful and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure you have a great experience.

About the course:

I arrived at a time when the greens were just sanded for annual maintenance and so that impacted putting a bit. Some of the fairway areas were treated with manure and the odor reminded me of a course near my home that is across from a cattle farm. The course has plenty of water and sand traps to challenge your skills. I managed to avoid all of that in my 18 holes of play. The putting practice area is large, and the driving range to me was different than most in how it has one large continuous mat that is like a carpet all the way up and down the hitting area. I think this is a great place for most amateur golfers to go out and enjoy some golf.

About Our Game:

I arrived early to have time to check things out before my T-time. I was teamed up with 3 other golfers, and we started playing at about 9 AM. My 3 golf buddies…

Ron

Michael

Alan

Michael is a high school teacher and is Ron’s grandson. Ron and Alan are both retired seniors. Alan and I teamed up together and played with Ron & Michael.

It didn’t take long to figure out that Alan was not your average weekend golfer. Turns out he is a golf instructor and so without bothering him for free instructions I just observed as much as I could to see what I could learn. As we played, I was able to stay close to him with the drive off the tee but after that it was Alan doing his thing the rest of the way. We played counting pars and birdies only and as might be expected Alan had 2 pars and a birdie to lead the way after just 3 holes. I got my first par on hole #4, Ron got his one and only on hole #13, and Michael looked like he was going to have zero until he pared 2 in a row on holes #16 & 17.

Results:

Ron                 1-Par 0-birdie

Michael           2-Par 0-birdie

Alan                12-Par 1-birdie

Tony                4-Par 1-birdie

Alan obviously played like a golf instructor, Ron was happy with his one par, and Michael was struggling a bit with his tee shots until Alan gave him some advice on hole #13 and then he ended up getting his 2 pars in a row. Go figure? I was happy with my 4 pars and one birdie, and it was just a good day for all overall.

My Favorite Hole:

I think the most fun hole I played was the par 3 hole #4. Fun because I made the green with my tee shot and no one else did (not even Alan). Then both Alan and I made par for the hole. I also liked the par 5 hole #17 because I made a great 20-foot putt for birdie.
