8/14/25
Alaska has a short golf season so I did a little research and learned that June, July, and August are the best months for golf in Alaska. I chose Fairbanks because there is the bonus of the super long daylight hours they have at this time of year. I contacted “The Midnight Sun” golf course and got a tee time 0n 8/14/25 for 6 PM with an expected finish at 10:30 PM and it would still be like maybe 6 PM at home.
This course claims to be the northern most golf course in America. Another course (Fairbanks Alaska Golf Course) claims to be the northern most 9-hole golf course in America. I played that one yesterday so now I have them both covered. This course also claims that hole #8 is the northern most golf hole in the USA and hole #9 has the northern most tee-box in the USA. Some of my golf buddies say they did not know there was any golf in Alaska. Well, there is golf in Alaska and it is a beautiful and fun place to golf if you time it right. You can expect to find the greens and fairways a little rougher than most other states, and maybe some bear poop and moose also. Where else in the USA can you get a tee-time as late as 8 PM and still have enough light to finish the game? Alaska is beautiful country and I loved the whole experience.

First Impressions:
The club house is much bigger than I expected. This course offers a full-service club house that includes dining, golf supplies, souvenirs, and even a golf simulator. I got my “Midnight Sun Golf Course” hat that is very special. There is plenty of room for scheduled events or hanging out with golf buddies (see pix#5&6). The staff are all super nice people and a lot of fun to chat with. The view from the club house deck is stunning (pix#4). I asked if they could arrange for me to play with at least one or two other seniors and they got me hooked up with 4 of them for a team of 5.
About the course:
This course has all the amenities you can want from a golf course. The club house offers much more than I expected, the driving range and putting practice areas are great, and the views are amazing around every hole. The fairways and greens are well maintained as can be expected for a short season and harsh winter weather golf course. If you make the trip, you will most likely have one of the best golf experiences you can have. I certainly did.
About Our Game:
I showed up early for my pre-arranged tee time so I could get a good feel for what to expect. I was introduced to 4 nice guys that were eager to play along with me. My golf partners…
Mike. W
Mike. M
John
Taylor
The two Mike’s and Tylor were only able to play the first 9 holes due to other commitments. After all, we were scheduled to finish at about 10:30 PM. John and I played the full 18 holes. I kept track of pars and birdies for all and full score for myself. I did not note as much details per hole as I usually do because there were 5 of us and I was enjoying the event too much to keep good notes.
Results for the first 9 holes:
Mike. W = 4 pars & 1 birdie
Mike. M = 0 pars & 2 birdies
Tylor = 5 pars & 0 birdies
John = 4 pars & 0 birdies
Tony = 4 pars & 0 birdies
Taylor wins the par contest and Mike. W next with 4 pars & 1 birdie. Mike. M made 2 birdies for 9 holes which is impressive. John and I just tied with 4 pars each.
At the end of 18 holes, I had 8 pars and 0 birdies and John finished with 5 pars and 0 birdies. I ended up with a total score of 85 which is one of my best for 18 holes. John was a great golf partner that I could play with every day if possible. Thank you, John, for all the great information you shared about the course and made the whole game a great experience.
My Favorite Hole:
I must claim hole # 8 and 9 as my favorites because hole #8 is the most northern golf hole in the USA and tee box #9 is the northern most tee box in the USA. I made par on both and so for me that was extra special.
