About the Golf Course
This golf course is known as “The Working Mans Country Club.” When I arrived and saw the small trailer type building that is the golf shop, I thought this is probably an older course that may need some upgrades. Well, that would be wrong. I found that this is an old course (built in 1929) and that is what gives it some special charm. I did not find anything that needed upgrade and the whole place just has a very charming and cozy kind of feel to it.
If you are not a long ball hitter there are only 2 par 5 holes to challenge you, and if you like par 3 you will enjoy 4 of those. There are a lot of geese around but they never got in the way of play.
Getting Started
Michael (the pro-shop manager) was very helpful in helping me schedule this event. If you need any special assistance with anything he will be more than happy to help you. Eddie (the starter) gave me some great tips like best hole for a picture (#7), and the most challenging holes are # 9 & 18. Eddie is a nice guy and if you are playing here for the first time you can get a lot of good information from Eddie. Thank you, Eddie.
My Favorite Hole
I like #12 just because it is a straight forward par 4 and we all made par. I also like #17 simply because I made my only birdie there.
The Players
Holland (goes by Holly) Retired math teacher & Staten Island resident.
Harry – Working in the financial industry. Came over from Manhattan to play here.
Our Game
#3 – Par 3. Harry made the first par of the day.
#5 – Par 5. Tony hit a great long and straight tee shot. 2nd shot went bad (out of bounds). I took the penalty and next shot landed just short of the green. I chipped on to the green and putted for a bogie. We all made bogie on this hole.
#10 – Par 4. Tony hit a disaster tee shot and finished the hole with a triple bogie.
#12 – Par 4. We all made par.
#14 – Par 4. Holly and Harry made par.
#17 – Par 4. Tony made a 15-foot putt for birdie.
Final Scores
Tony (83) Pars = 3 Birdie =1
Holly (87) Pars = 4
Harry (92) Pars = 3
Holly won the par contest.
