About the course
This is a 9-hole course established in 2002. It is known as “the poor man’s country club.” My first impression was “Wow” there is a lot going on here for a 9-hole course. They have a driving rage, chipping and putting area, and believe it or not a miniature golf course. They also offer lesson packages and if that is not enough, check out the restaurant & bar with a nice outdoor patio. The staff are all super nice people and go out of their way to help make your day here fun no matter your score. I wish there was a place like this near me in Oregon. This place gives you a lot of bang for the buck and I feel it is worth the drive from Staten Island. Next time I am in the area I will be sure to do this one again.
Getting started
I contacted Justin Rasmus (Pro-shop manager) to schedule my “golfing the USA event.” Right from the start Justin was verry accommodating and was great at helping me get this scheduled. Once I arrived, he went above and beyond to help make this a successful event. Unfortunately, the plan to schedule me to play with a couple of seniors did not work out so he set me up with 3 New Jersey fireman instead. This worked out great and we played the 9 holes twice to make it 18. It was a lot of fun. The 3 firemen I played with were the nicest and most fun guys. When you play with people like this it makes the day a great day no matter what your score is. Thank you, Justin, for making this happen. Thank you, NJ firemen, for letting me join you and have a golf day I will always remember.
Our group
Matt
John
Bryan (they call him Dootch) (All are from the Elizabeth New Jersey Fire Department)
Our game
We decided to not keep regular score for the firemen but will keep track of pars or better.
#1 Par-4 I made the first par.
#3 Par-3 Matt made par. (2 in a row)
#4 Par-5 Bryan must have been using his tree-wood and got the honors of losing the first ball in the trees. I got on in 3 and still ended up with a bogie. Matt made his 2nd par.
#7 Par-3 Bryan made par.
#9 Par-4 I made my 2nd par.
#10 Par-4 I hit my longest t-shot but had a wild 2nd shot and ended up with a bogie.
#11 Par-5 Bryan hit a hard right shot and ended up in the other fairway. However, he made a great recovery and finished with a par.
#12 Par-3 I hit into a sand trap and had a disaster trying to get out. I finished with a triple bogie. Bryan chipped up and missed par by maybe ½ inch. It rimed around the hole.
#13 Par-5 I hit a great 2nd shot, got on the green in 2 and made par.
#14 Par-4 Matt & Bryan made par.
#15 Par-4 John made his first and only par.
#16 Par-3 Matt made an amazing 20-foot putt. Unfortunately, it was for bogie.
Final Scores:
Tony 3 pars (total score 91)
Matt 4 pars
Bryan 3 pars
John 1 par
Matt won the par contest
My favorite hole
I am going to go with #8/17 par-4 as my favorite. This hole is a challenge with water on the right and a large marshy area close up front. I scored a bogie here on 8 and then a double bogie the second time (17). I like the challenge and want to come back here sometime and finish this hole with a par.
Note:
Somehow, I missed pictures of Bryan in action. He is a long ball hitter. See him in the group picture (any doubt?) and he is difficult to keep up with. He made 3 pars and they were one each on a par-3, par-4, and par-5 hole. He can do it all.
