Welcome to my blog “Golfing The USA”
June 1st 2019
Hello, well as the title suggest, I am planning to golf in every state in the USA. If you enjoy golf, you may enjoy following this blog. I welcome your thoughts, suggestions, and any comments you wish to share. If you are not a golfer, I hope you will find something here that will inspire you to get out and do something similar that is special to you and will motivate you to be active and happy for all your future years ahead.
Here is the Who, What, Why, Where, and When of my plan and goal.
WHO:
My name is Tony Lucci and I live in Beaverton OR. I planned to retire on July 1 2020 and I did. However, Covid made traveling difficult and dangerous so this whole idea was put on the back burner for a while. A great security systems company found me and made me an offer I could not refuse so I went back to work thinking I would only do it for maybe one year and hopefully Covid would be over. I was doing so well and having fun at the job so I stayed on longer. I stayed until July 1, 2024 and finally retired again (permanently). I am now back on track with this plan and I am looking forward to staying active, happy, healthy, and motivated by doing something I love to do for many years ahead.
WHAT:
So, What’s it all about?
So, what is it all about?
For me it is about golf. I am not a great golfer but not a bad one either. I just love being out there on the course, getting a little exercise in a fun way, challenging myself to learn and improve, meeting friendly likeminded people, and traveling to experience different golf courses as often as I can.
What I will do…
I will golf 27 holes per state. I plan on golfing 18 holes at a mid to upper scale golf course and 9 holes at a more economy scale course. I will try to invite a senior golfer to join me for the 18-hole game and a junior golfer to join me on the 9-hole game.
If all goes well, I will complete 1,350 holes of golf across 50 states and I will have played with many seniors and junior amateur golfers as possible along the way.
WHY:
Well I have 3 really good reasons…
- Because staying active is proven to be the best recipe for living a longer life with a healthy mind and body.
- Because having something to always look forward to is much better than being bored. Golfing the USA will keep me looking forward to the next trip and busy with planning and strategizing. I won’t be going to a new state every week or every month but I hope to make 3 trips per year covering at least 2 states on each trip. I am setting this up to be an 8-year adventure. However, being realistic and because I am in no big hurry (it’s not a race) I figure I may not keep that pace consistently and so I will consider this could possibly end up being a 10-year mission. If I can golf on different golf courses in different states for 10 years of retirement, I will be very happy with that and should have some great times to look back on.
- Because I want to promote the idea of seniors to do something like this and enjoy every day. I also want to promote the game of golf and keep it going strong for armatures. The best way to do that is to inspire junior golfers to get into the game, learn it, love it, and who knows…maybe I could meet and play with the next Tiger Woods without even knowing it.
WHERE:
I will start with Oregon since I live here and end in Hawaii. I will set a plan each year for the year ahead and travel to every state in the USA. I will plan 3 trips per year and try to go to areas where the weather is most suitable for each trip. This will work ok for the most part but eventually I expect I will end up being in some areas where the weather won’t be what I would consider ideal. I will not be planning the North East for example in the winter months. I am not looking to torture my self out there so some careful planning will be wise.
WHEN:
I started this adventure on June 29, 2019 in Oregon and made it to Virginia and Tennessee before putting it all on hold for a while. As of July 1, 2024 I am back on track planning trips.
PROMOTING – MOTIVATING – INSPIRING – CHALLANGING
I decided why make this all just about me? Why not share this with everyone I know and anyone that might be interested. Maybe I can promote the game of golf for armatures, motivate other seniors to set a similar goal, inspire juniors to get involved early, and challenge others to just get out and do something you love that will keep you feeling good every day.
Promoting:
I hope my goal to golf the USA will help bring attention to the game and help it grow. I know I am not the only person to golf the USA but I haven’t found anyone (yet) that did it or is doing it quite like this. They did it as a personal adventure and goal. I am doing it for me but sharing the idea with everyone.
Motivating:
I hope this will motivate some seniors to set a goal for something similar and get started looking forward to doing something you love to do. If you’re a nature lover, maybe set a goal to visit every park in your state. How about a goal to walk 1000 miles? It could be done in under 2 years.
